About Me

This is who the hell I am

In a world where lyricism seems to be fading, B-SimmS is bringing back its color. The Texas native strives to make music equally entertaining and impactful for the ears.

Born in Houston, SimmS always had a love for rap. He used to watch videos on Yo! MTV Raps in the early 90’s and perform them when he memorized the words. He first rap album was a cassette of Warren G G Funk Era. It was from there where he started to get an interest in making music, by making an impromptu drum set out of a tin can and toy swords. That MacGuyver-like enthusiasm led to him writing his first rhymes at 11; but he stopped soon after when his friends made fun of his lackluster skills.

In high school, SimmS got some momentum back toward music. He started writing at the end of his 9th grade year and found a renewed passion. SimmS would find himself taking the bus home from summer school and writing a rhyme or two. That same summer his church started an organization for Christian rap and he landed his first performance. However, it was bittersweet as he forgot his words but forged through it. The writing continued throughout high school and all the way into college at Texas State in 2004. In the Spring Semester of his freshman year, the relatively unknown undergrad began making waves when he performed at a talent show and dropped the mic after forgetting the last two lines of his song. The audience never forgot that moment but also kept tabs on the talent. SimmS would perform at various Open Mics and even did a showcase that featured his gospel rapping. However, performing shows was not enough; people had to take this experience with him.

As a Christmas gift, B-SimmS received the Sony Acid recording program. He then bought a $10 mic and began recording his own projects using Soundclick beats and freestyling over mainstream instrumentals. In 2007, B-SimmS released his 1st mixtape, Liquor Store Shades and began selling them the CD’s across campus. That same year, he appeared on the promotional mixtape for Texas State University, A Texas Statement Volume 1 as well as Volume 2 the following year. The next year, B-SimmS signed with local record label, Royal Records, and released Menace II Sobriety. The following years saw Too fat for Skinny Jeans (2010); Smash Mouth Mixtape (2011); B.S. Heartbreak (2012); Mr. Simmons (2013). In 2015, B-SimmS dropped his debut album, Perfect Imperfections, which featured the lead single, Touchdown. It was followed up in 2017 with an experimental Hip hop/R&B EP, A Fuckboi and a Gentleman, exclusively on Datpiff; and in 2018 with his sophomore effort, Nappy Waves.

Throughout all of this going on, B-SimmS was still in school while trying to pursue music. His passion for hip hop led him to work at KTSW, the school’s radio station, as host of the hip hop show, The Boombox. In 2009, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Electronic Media and followed that with a Master’s Degree in New Media. SimmS has continued his passions outside of music with blogging. In 2013 he became a writer for BOSS Sports, giving his take on sports news stories involving African Americans. Even in the midst of all of that, B-SimmS has managed to keep up with his musical work. Living in San Marcos, allowed him to travel back and forth to shows in Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels and Dallas. He moved to Austin in 2015 and continued performing throughout the city as well as networking with some of the more notable acts around.

B-SimmS describes his music as cold beer and dark liquor in a room where everyone wants to drink wine. Subject matter ranges from drinking, heartbreak, random lyricism, black empowerment and various other takes on certain topics. He tries to continue the vibes set by his inspirations of Nas and Jay-Z and apply it with a 2024 filter. The world will soon hear more of B-SimmS and his peculiar mixture as he is still searching for shows to perform at, looking for features and working on his upcoming, yet-to-be-titled album, slated to drop soon in the upcoming year.
